Carroll and Benjamin Henry Latrobe, donating his services in 1805 agreed on the neoclassical design. The major historian of architecture, Niklaus Pevsner, calls it "the most beautiful church in North America." Many others concur that it is Latrobe's masterpiece and one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the world.
